'She Opens Her Hand To The Poor And Reaches Out Her Hands To The Needy. She Opens Her Mouth With Wisdom, And The Teaching Of Kindness Is On Her Tongue.'Proverbs 31: 21& 26
An integral part of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church, the Mar Thoma Suvishesha Sevika Sanghom is the dedicated women's wing, fostering spiritual growth, fellowship, and service among its members. Established in 1919 under the visionary leadership of the Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Mar Thoma Suffragan Metropolitan, the organization has since grown into a global network with branches in every parish and congregation of the Mar Thoma Church. The Sevika Sanghom operates with the central motto of "Service and Evangelism in the life and mission of the Mar Thoma Church." This guiding principle is actualized through a variety of programs and initiatives aimed at the spiritual development of women and their active participation in the church's mission. At its core, the Sevika Sanghom provides a platform for women to deepen their faith and biblical knowledge through regular prayer meetings, Bible studies, and retreats. Beyond the spiritual nourishment of its members, the organization is deeply committed to charitable and social welfare activities. This includes running orphanages, schools, and hostels, as well as providing support to the underprivileged and marginalized. Through these endeavors, the Mar Thoma Suvishesha Sevika Sanghom empowers women to be effective leaders and agents of change within their communities and the wider world, embodying the Christian spirit of love and service. The Suvishesha Sevika Sanghom of the Immanuel Mar Thoma Church, Houston (IMTC) was established in 1994. The members meet regularly on the 2nd and 3rd Saturdays of each month at 10:00 AM either in-person or on a virtual platform. Regular programs of the IMTC Sevika Sanghom include Bible study sessions, intercessory prayer, visiting the sick, and community initiatives. The Sevika Sanghom members financially support all projects of the church, including sponsoring the kitchen area of the Fellowship Hall and one of the multipurpose rooms in the Jubilee building. The Sevika Sanghom serves a critical role in all regular activities of IMTC, including worship, retreats and annual fellowship programs, as well as events at the Center, Regional, and Diocesan levels. The most impactful and continuing mission service project of the IMTC Suvishesha Sevika Sanghom is the Hagar Fund. This fundraising project, started in 2011, aims to provide financial support to assist widows and underprivileged women who face tremendous social and economic disadvantages and barriers.
At its very heart, the IMTC Suvishesha Sevika Sanghom is dedicated to the foundational principles of spiritual growth and mutual support, focusing on building each other up through the timeless power of the Word of God and the intimacy of prayer. This is more than just a weekly meeting; it is the cornerstone of our fellowship. Recognizing that our lives extend beyond spiritual devotion, we aim to provide a welcoming venue for supporting each of our members both socially and spiritually. We strive to be a safe harbor where women can form genuine, lasting friendships, share life's joys, and find comfort and practical help during times of trial. Our ultimate vision is to cultivate a body of Christ that is deeply and demonstrably rooted in love—a love that is patient, kind, and unconditional, serving as a testament to His grace in our lives.
To this end, we are actively and intentionally working to engage and provide meaningful opportunities for the development and empowerment of every single woman in IMTC. We are committed to identifying and nurturing the unique God-given talents within our fellowship, creating pathways for women to grow in confidence and leadership. This involves offering platforms for them to share their testimonies, lead initiatives, and use their skills in service to the church and the wider community. By empowering each woman to realize her full potential in Christ, we believe the entire church body is edified and strengthened, creating a vibrant, inclusive, and dynamic community where every woman knows she is valued, supported, and equipped to flourish.
